Pet Med 101 — Course Description

Pet Med 101 is a comprehensive companion animal medicine course designed for veterinary students, recent graduates, and veterinarians seeking stronger practical and clinical skills in small animal practice. The course focuses mainly on dogs and cats, combining essential theoretical knowledge with clinically applicable approaches used in everyday veterinary medicine.

The curriculum covers major body systems and commonly encountered diseases in companion animals, including gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary, dermatological, reproductive, and infectious diseases. Students will also gain a strong understanding of vaccination protocols, antimicrobial therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, diagnostic reasoning, clinical manifestations, and practical treatment planning.

Special emphasis is placed on recognizing clinical signs, building differential diagnoses, selecting appropriate diagnostic tests, understanding pharmacology, and applying evidence-based treatment approaches in real clinical settings. Surgical foundations including spaying and neutering principles, perioperative preparation, instrumentation, and postoperative care are also included.

Throughout the course, learners will develop practical clinical thinking and improve their confidence in managing common medical and surgical cases presented in small animal veterinary clinics.
